My Personal Story
Welcome! I’m Kathy Caprino, and I’m so happy you’re here.
I’d like to share a bit about my work as “Finding Brave” expert, career and executive coach, writer, speaker, and leadership trainer dedicated to the advancement of professional women, and also share my personal story that prompted me to serve women to achieve true breakthrough to reach their highest and most thrilling potential.
Briefly, I was a corporate marketing executive and spent 18 years in corporate life. In the beginning, it was exciting and rewarding, and I enjoyed it. But as I approached 40 years old, things began to change. I was outwardly very “successful,” but inwardly I struggled deeply. My work began to feel false and inauthentic to me much of the time, and work-life balance was unattainable. I couldn’t speak up truthfully or be my true self. I got sick frequently (with a painful tracheal infection every few months), was exhausted and drained much of the time, and my work didn’t feel meaningful or positive in the world. And I faced discrimination, toxic colleagues, narcissistic bosses and more.
I knew I needed outside help to reinvent my career, and reached out to get it, through working with a therapist, career counselor and mentor, etc. But nothing moved me forward to make the changes I needed to. I then began to experience all twelve of the “hidden” crises I write and speak about, including chronic illness, discrimination, financial struggle, feeling like I was wasting my real talents, missing my children’s lives, and longing to do something of greater meaning to me in my worklife. In addition, I experienced all of the 7 damaging power gaps that keep professional women from thriving in their work (which my newest book, The Most Powerful You: 7 Bravery-Boosting Paths to Career Paths, explores fully.
Finally, after a brutal layoff in the days following the attacks of 9/11, I made a decision to reclaim my life. I decided to help people, and not hurt and be hurt. I earned a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, became a therapist and trained as a career coach and launched a career coaching practice. And I began speaking to women around Connecticut and nationally about how we can thrive through change, instead of being flattened by it. I was astounded at what I found, which was that 7 out of 10 working women I spoke with were as miserable as I had been.
And my latest research reveals that 98% of professional women are facing at least one of the 7 damaging power gaps, and over 75% are experience 3 or more. I decided I needed to understand why, and to bring new solutions to the table for women.
So I conducted a yearlong national research study on women overcoming professional crisis, which culminated in my book Breakdown, Breakthrough about the 12 “hidden” crises working women face today and how to overcome them. And I launched my career coaching and consulting firm, Kathy Caprino, LLC (formerly Ellia Communications). And my new book and Finding Brave programs help women overcome the power gaps that keep them from reaching their most thrilling and rewarding potential.
I’ve learned a great deal in the past 15 years since I left corporate America–about work-life challenge, midlife, transition, breakthrough, finding brave, career bliss, and the brilliance and courage of women today.
Now as a career success coach, “finding brave” expert and podcaster, and Senior Contributor on Forbes.com and writer on Thrive Global, LinkedIn and other platforms, and a top media source on women, leadership and careers, I focus intensively on helping professional women “dig deep, discover their right work, and illuminate the world with it.”
I truly love my work, and am supremely fulfilled by it and am passionately committed every day to helping other women around the world achieve breakthrough (my favorite word in the English language!) to reach their highest and most thrilling goals and visions – in their work, businesses, relationships and in their lives.
In addition to my professional work, I’m a tennis player and an active singer and performer, and have sung on numerous recordings and at choral appearances at Carnegie Hall, the United Nations, SONY Recording Studios, and other prominent venues.
I have also performed and recorded with renowned jazz percussionist Arthur Lipner. (Check out our Meditative Audio Companion to Breakdown, Breakthrough!) As an accomplished singer, writer, and speaker, I coach others who wish to bring forward their creative talents and abilities into the forefront.
