Welcome to Episode #9 of my video blog Work You Love!  I’m happy you’re here!

This episode examines the question of why it can feel so hard to create and launch into the world something you desperately long for, and helps you determine if you’re potentially heading in the wrong direction.

If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Am I doing something wrong here?” this video will help.

Here’s my take:

The key concepts to understand to determine if you’re heading in the right direction are:

1. Realize that everything we create of meaning, value and import requires WORK. It won’t just fall in your lap.  “Build it and they will come” is not a sound business strategy.  The real question is, “What does this work ‘feel’ like to you?”  If it’s exhausting, debilitating and draining, it’s time to rethink your direction.

2. Overly-attaching to how it has to look and to unrealistic expectations only leads to suffering.

3. Think about “essence vs. form” – have you chosen the right “form” for bringing forward the essence of what you want to create in the world?

Today’s top message:

  1. Great Vlog. I think for me personally, the idea of creating something new, whatever it may be, is what seems so hard after being at a corporate job for so long (23 years). Although I know I need to move on to other ventures in life and work, the dedication and commitment it will take to “start over” does seem overwhelming. If anything of value being added to the world brings emotions of fear and uncertainty, how can we distinguish if the “form” is wrong?
Maybe the essence is there- but the body has no idea how to express it (the form). Does my question make sense?
    Thank you!

  2. Thanks, Jenny. That’s a great question, and I certainly understand where you’re coming from. Before I was laid off after an 18-year stint in corporate life, I had NO idea what I wanted to do or be that would free me from my corporate unhappiness. Thankfully, I took the plunge and started completely over by getting a Master’s degree in therapy and becoming a marriage and family therapist and a coach (at age 40). It did take a great deal of time, energy and commitment. But what a blessing it was in my life!

To address your question, I’d like to ask you to answer these questions honestly:

    1) Are you fearful at the thought of ANY change? (If so, you’ll need some support to help you through that)
    2) Is fear of stretching bigger something you’ve experienced throughout your life? Has change always made you feel insecure? If so, what do you think are some of the root causes of that?
    3) Are there any potential new directions that you could take that would bring more value and excitement into your life, but yet not represent a wholesale change?

Here’s another video that I’d point you to: How To Avoid The Pendulum Effect.

If you don’t know how to find the right “form” of what you want, coaching might be a perfect start. Get some outside support to help you determine some new directions that won’t turn your life and “system” upside down, but will get you moving out of your rut and moving forward. Also, take my free Career Path Self-Assessment right away, to start brainstorming what else you can do. I hope those are helpful! All best wishes.
